Recently, the Ministry of Education issued a Notice on the Announcement of the Filing and Approval Results of Undergraduate Majors in Regular Institutions of Higher Learning in 2021. The five majors applied by our university, including International Economic and Trade Rules, Leisure Sports, Integrated Circuit Design and Integrated System, Urban Underground Space Engineering and Calligraphy, have been successfully approved. Among them, International Economic and Trade Rules and Urban Underground Space Engineering are the first majors of undergraduate universities in Zhejiang province.

The College of Fine Arts and Design of Wenzhou University is one of the earliest institutions of its kind in China to establish majors in fine arts, design and clothing. The college now has two First-level Disciplines for Master’s Degree Granting of Art (Fine Arts, Art Design) and Design, and two Second-level Disciplines for Master’s Degree Granting of Curriculum and Teaching Theory (Fine Arts) and Discipline Teaching (Fine Arts). The College of Fine Arts was established in 1984. Among the colleges and universities in the province, the direction of art education was established the earliest (only later than the China Academy of Fine Arts), and the discipline of Chinese painting was once a key discipline supported by Zhejiang Province. In the process of long-term development and teaching accumulation, a discipline mainly focusing on art education and characterized by Chinese painting creation has been form. The college now boasts the Institute of Fine Arts creation, the Institute of Creative Design and other teaching and scientific research institutions.

Relying on the similar majors of Fine Arts and Design, the University has created a strong team of calligraphy teachers, most of whom have the professional title of vice senior or above, and 4 of them have doctoral degrees. Professional teachers have participated in dozens of national academic forums and calligraphy exhibitions. In years of teaching practice, they have accumulated rich teaching experience in calligraphy, which can meet the needs of talents training of this major. Nowadays, Wenzhou University has been approved to grant doctoral degrees, and the College of Fine Arts and Design has a master of Fine Arts degree program. With the great development of the university and college and the continuous introduction of teachers, Professor Zhu Guoping noted, “The establishment of calligraphy major will soon realize the school running goal of integrating undergraduate and postgraduate talents training. Of course, since the university was approved as a doctoral degree awarding unit, we are also striving to achieve a higher-level of talent cultivation.”

The calligraphy major of Wenzhou University plans to recruit students nationwide in 2022. The first enrollment number is 20, including 4 students from Zhejiang province and 16 students from outside zhejiang Province. The objective is to cultivate specialized talents with solid cultural and artistic accomplishment and theoretical knowledge level of art, the ability of calligraphy artistic creation and teaching, innovative spirit and entrepreneurial consciousness, who can engage in creation, research, professional teaching and application in the field of culture and art and all kinds of schools and training institutions.
